I think 12-18 months is even too short of an estiomate - it's hard to make any predictions about that
but it might take a significant longer time until that happens.
So I see no other feasable way than to allocate/request another 
numeric attribute and continue from there.

(While simultaneously the vendor in question should be pushed to 
fix his implementation anyway)
