Huaimo,

There are three 5G Edge Computing related meta data to be carried by the BGP UPDATE associated with the Client routes: Load Index, Site Preference, and Site Capacity.  Load Index & Site Preference are attached to Tunnel-Encap sub-TLV. The Capacity value is carried by the Opaque Extended community.

Here are the reasons:
When there is a failure occurring at an Edge site (or pod), many instances can be impacted. Instead of many BGP Withdrawal messages for instances being impacted to the corresponding ingress routers, the egress router can send one single BGP UPDATE indicating the new capacity of the site (e.g. 0 for site failure or xx% for site degradation). The ingress routers can switch all or a portion of the instances that are associated with the site depending on how much the site is degraded.

We felt that using the opaque Extended Community with a new subtype (Site Capacity Cost) is more efficient to carry the Capacity value for large number of routes, instead of attaching to the Tunnel Encap attributes


The Opaque Extended community has (with High value = 0x03).

Hi Authors of the draft,

    What are the reasons for you to split the information into two classes and distribute them in different ways? One class is distributed in Tunnel Encap Attributes, and the other in Opaque Extended Community.

This draft proposes a new SubTLV (AppMetaData) for the BGP Tunnel Encapsulation Attribute [RFC9012] that indicates the running status and environment of directly attached 5G Edge Computing (EC) instances.

The AppMetaData can be used by routers in the 5G Local Data Network to make path selection not only based on the routing distance but also the running environment of the destinations. The goal is to improve latency and performance for 5G EC services.

In your discussion of this adoption call, please consider these questions:

1) The addition of this type of information to tunnels is useful for inter-domain routing within 5G networks?

2) What type of additional load this data to Basic Tunnel encapsulation [RFC9012]?

For example is the load placed by this draft equal or Less than the SR routing additions from such as draft-ietf-idr-segment-routing-te-policy?

3) Will the addition of this information aid Routing in 5G networks?
