A new IETF non-working group email list has been created.

List address: dnslb@ietf.org
Archive: https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/browse/dnslb/
To subscribe: https://mailman3.ietf.org/mailman3/lists/dnslb.ietf.org/

Purpose:
The DNS protocol standards traditionally presume that the records for each domain name are globally valid, independent of the query source. However, many authoritative DNS servers today return different answers based on the client's location, as inferred from the query's source address or indicated in the EDNS Client Subnet option. This capability can be seen in BIND 9's Views feature, Knot DNS's "geoip" module, the PowerDNS GeoIP Backend, and many hosted DNS service offerings. Zone operators use this technique to avoid overload and congestion, reduce latency, and achieve other traffic engineering objectives.

This mailing list is a place to share our experiences with DNS-based load balancing, traffic steering, and location-dependent answers, and to look for ways to improve support for these use cases in IETF protocol standards.

This list belongs to IETF area: Ops
