It is a mistake, because most IETFers won't do it. The right way to express this is to say "I don't think IETFers are going to do this, and I'm certainly not. Can you set up an IETF mailing list and wiki for this? Thanks!" If the answer to that request is "hell no, we want the Cisco branding and won't do the hackathon without people registering for our developer thingy," then I'd definitely be right there with you in objecting, but can't we take it one step at a time?
