I guess you got it about right. Definitely alternative 3) is more 
desirable. What might happen, though, especially for some well-known 
webmail providers, is that the ASCII space is already pretty well used, 
and new users who need to get a fallback ASCII address with their 
non-ASCII mail address might have some difficulties finding something 
they think is appropriate. Not sure much can be done about this.
