The WG (and some pre-WG effort) discussed this issue in some
depth early on and more or less reached the conclusion that you
have, with very similar reasoning.  The "friendly alias" isn't
the only problem with a punycode (or other) encoded form, but we
have already had DNS (and other) experience that users who
wanted to use native (non-ASCII) characters don't think one has
done them any favors by migrating them from a lousy ASCII-based
transliteration or mnemonic to an encoded from that isn't even
memorable.
