Dear Mark and Annie,

I'm so sorry to hear of Mark's terminal illness this way. My mind immediately flipped back to 1979 when Mark and I first met and I used his DIALNET protocol as a basis for ttyftp. Yes, we have been friends a long time Mark. I've always enjoyed our friendship, Mark, and the work we did together to birth what finally became IMAP was really a blast !

When you leave us Mark, for me it will be a very sad day. And for Annie … Well, only Annie can feel what really is beyond words to describe. You are the best-of-the-best in so many ways Mark and no one on this planet can argue his point of view better than you. And, this certainly applies to much more than Internet protocols.

Somehow, I see you Annie and Unix walking together, you with your gun on your shoulder, into the Alaskan wilderness to seek the solitude of three that you so dearly loved …

This is such a strange way to say goodbye. I wish Joan and I could share a nice bottle of Ridge Zinfandel with you to toast your life together with Annie and that dear ol' dog Unix.

I will miss you guy and will always be your friend and colleague!

BIG HUG to Annie ...

Bill
