Hi IPPM,

Just prior to the last IPPM session in March, we produced the description of the protocol in an Internet Draft (below), used by the running code for the IP-layer Capacity Metric and Method [0]. With the protocol description present, we could more easily separate comments that should be handled by the protocol and not the method of measurement.

Now that the IP-layer Capacity Metric and Method [0] draft is approved (June 2021), we can revisit the client-server protocol and consider further action in IPPM.

We can have this discussion in the context of new security modes of operation for the protocol, where we need to recognize that sometimes the need for measurement accuracy will override protections in some phases of the protocol's operation.

See Section 10, item 3 for more info about the security modes [1], where only A and B have been implemented in the running code.

+++++++

We would like to hear from the WG AND other experts on the topic of the additional security features they believe would be sufficient to reduce this aspect to a non-controversial review at the WG and higher.

IOW, what security features are needed to do it right, and do it once?

+++++++

Thanks!

Al and Len
