And, there is no reason for this kind of VPN service to have any
INTERNAL_DNS_DOMAIN, so it would be reasonable for a well configured client
to simply ignore such things.

(It's not like they have .internal or .corp for you...
Some of the services offer virtual corporation services, but that's really
a different kettle of fish)
