IBM US Patent 5,148,479 covers (or at least so say the lawyers) some of the techniques used in the protocols (especially quick mode). However, RFC1822 provides a "grant of rights" by IBM for usage of this patent in key management of ipsec. (The text is somewhat outdated as for its terminology, but still refers to "Photuris or derivatives" which should include IKE) Hugo
