This topic seems to be similar to the one about giving semantic meaning to IP addresses. If the standards say no, and that's what they say, then anything like that would be restricted to "behind closed doors, among consenting adults."

Not sure how anything else can work, with the standards as written, and as widely implemented, for many years.

And if the implementation is non-standard, in limited domains, it could even be seen as a "feature," in that limited domain.
