> Don't you think there is an obligation on service providers to tell their users what services are intentionally no longer available?

Not explicitly, they never do! For example, in our enterprise net years ago, DECnet was supported. There is no explicit indication that DECnet is no longer supported. Or, is IP multicast supported? Who knows? MPLS? Any number of examples like this exist.

Hosts already have many ways of determining whether some protocol or other is supported on the network.

> If you commuted to work on the #400 or the #600 bus, wouldn't you think the bus operator was obliged to tell you that the #400 was not running any more? Probably by posting a notice on board the #600?

Perhaps so, but do I expect that information to appear on the sign in front of the bus, as it is arriving at the bus stop? Or do I expect that information to be provided to me "out of band," e.g. by the bus driver, as I board the bus, or at the transport service's web site?

I'm saying, the bus rider has many ways of determining whether that bus route will continue to operate next week, without needing an explicit indication on the bus itself.
