The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is building an Aeronautical Telecommunications
Network with Internet Protocol Services (ATN/IPS). ICAO sees a use case for an IPv6 Air/Ground
(A/G) interface to support aircraft communications with ATN/IPS ground domain correspondents.
This document discusses elements of the use case that have implications for IPv6 operations.

Please post any use case-oriented comments for this document on v6ops@ietf.org. See also a
document titled: "Transmission of IPv6 Packets over Aeronautical ("aero") Interfaces" posted
on ipv6@ietf.org that presents a candidate solution.

Abstract:
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is building a
worldwide IPv6-based Air Traffic Management (ATM) service known as
the Aeronautical Telecommunications Network with Internet Protocol
Services (ATN/IPS). Aircraft connect to the ATN/IPS via an IPv6 Air/
Ground (A/G) interface that provides a nexus for control and data
messages exchanges over all available aviation wireless data links.
This document discusses the use case that motivates a new IPv6
   interface abstraction.
