Thanks very much for your feedback.

The sustainability challenges AI development and use pose in general are indeed critical elements for ICT sustainability, not only from energy and resource perspectives but also from societal (ethical use, bias, etc.) and economic (concentration of power, inequality, etc.). As a future user of AI technologies, networking will indeed be impacted and this is implicitly covered in the charter. Not being a core AI research group, the RG could not expect to innovate on core AI sustainability aspects though. Mostly, emphasizing requirements, methodologies and collaboration with adjacent AI-focused research actions.

We could indeed highlight this perspective in the charter as this will be in the minds of many colleagues. Thanks again for bringing it up.

Hi Diego, all,

It appears that AI/ML is not explicitly addressed in the document, despite the fact that future internet architectures are likely to incorporate these technologies as core elements. Given the expected increase in power demand driven by AI/ML applications within internet infrastructure, it might be beneficial for the research group to highlight this aspect as well.

Thanks for sharing this proposal. I agree the sustainability of the Internet is a certainly interesting research topic, though I would like to see the scope associated with sustainability in its widest sense, and not only limited to energy consumption issues. While this wider scope is mentioned in the proposed charter, I think some more emphasis on these other aspects (societal, economic...) should be made.

Let's discuss this in more detail in Dublin...

We have been working on a draft charter for an IRTF Proposed Research Group: Sustainability and the Internet Research Group (SUSTAIN RG). Please find enclosed v1.0 of this draft charter proposal for your review and feedback.

We have scheduled a Public Side Meeting at IETF 121 in Dublin, on 6 November 2024, at 14:30 GMT (UTC+0) in Wicklow Hall 2A, to present the background and details of the charter and to have an open discussion. We are aware that public side meetings are difficult to attend remotely. Accordingly, we will arrange an additional on-line meeting about a week after the IETF 121 to ensure adequate access for remote participation as well.

We have created a GitHub repository for the development of the charter with community feedback and the management of the side meeting at: https://github.com/rezaki-ali/IRTF_SUSTAIN_RG. The draft charter is available in this repository as well.

We would greatly appreciate it if you would be able to review the draft charter proposal for the SUSTAIN RG and kindly share your feedback with us please. We would also be very happy to see you at the SUSTAIN RG Public Side Meeting at IETF 121 and/or at the on-line meeting to be arranged just after IETF 121.
