Purpose: For information

Body: This FG-AI4AD comes at a time when road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death. There is a clear need to ensure AI innovations are focused on eliminating this global epidemic.

The FG-AI4AD is established as a multi-stakeholder group open to participation from anyone, including governments, academia, industry, NGOs, SDOs and other interested parties. Participation is free of charge. I’ve attached the agreed Background and Terms of Reference which covers the tasks, activities and deliverables.

The objective of the Focus Group is to support standardization activities for services and applications enabled by AI systems in autonomous and assisted driving in accordance with the 1949 and 1968 Convention on Road Traffic. The work of this FG links closely with the UNECE Global Forum for Road Safety (e.g. WP1, WP29, GRVA) and progresses will be shared with such committees.

The FG aims to establish a universal minimal performance threshold for AI enabled driving functions (such as AI as a Driver) which is essential to building the global public trust required for widespread deployment of AI on our roads.

It is important to define such a minimal acceptable performance threshold for AI deployed on our roads and meet the minimum public expectation that;
1. AI meets, or exceeds, the performance of a competent & careful human driver
2. AI never engages in careless, dangerous or reckless driving behaviour
3. AI remains aware, willing and able to avoid collisions at all times

We would like you to join and contribute to this international platform, with other stakeholders, to lay the foundations for making roads safer worldwide.
