Since the dormant JSON WG has expressed no interest in numeric data types outside of the universe constrained by IEEE-754 double precision, various (entirely uncoordinated) vendor initiatives are currently in the works.

Twitter's "solution" to message IDs
{"id": 10765432100123456789, "id_str": "10765432100123456789", ...}
pretty well illustrates the JSON number enigma  :-)
