We completely agree.
I was just using "represented" as a short form of "converted to a representation".
To repeat, we are not interchanging the objects, but representations of them.

I know that I should have added "IPA" to this... :-)
(Of course, it just was a constructed example.  
I have never seen this particular problem in actual interchange.)
