While a "L3 VLAN" means that this switch (well L3-switch) except for having defined a VLAN also defined a VLAN-interface connected to this VLAN in question (to be used as default gateway for sts connected to this VLAN).

Having that said you can combine the both cases above.

That is lets say you have VLAN 1 on all interfaces and define a VLAN-interface with an IP-address which then is configured for VLAN 1.

Unless you have a different VLAN for the uplink (if we speak about a L3-switch) then this switch will handle this VLAN as a "L2 VLAN" because the default gateway to reach outside this VLAN is not a VLAN-interface on this particular switch
