Glad to hear it OP, you made the right move here I think. 

Good luck and keep your head up. 
You did exactly the right thing.  I'm impressed that you were able to realize you're in over your head,  asked for help, told your parents (at the risk of being embarred) and most of all, that you took ownership and responsibility of the problem.  
The embarrment of it all was what held me 

I want to be able to drop the s from overhead with as minimal noise as possible.
I have done a google search and found people use carpet and carpet padding. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Don't know if you've seen this at Pendlay forums yet.

Beyond that, I would recommend sound proofing so the banging noise waves don't bounce around like Jon North's barbells.
