Memory Health My friend, for whom I am DPOA, was admitted to a nursing home two months ago after falling and sustaining two broken bones in the hospital. She has dementia. She has no family. We shared a home for 26 years prior to her hospitalization and I cared for her, alone, for 4 1/2 years. I visit two or three times a week for several hours each time...I do her nails, attend meals with her, accompany her as she maneuvers her wheelchair around the unit where she lives, play board games with her, and we attend movies she likes which are shown as an activity. I have things to make her room cozy and brought things from home such as pictures, a favorite pillow, her favorite candy. Several times a week, (not on the days I visit) one of the nurses will help her to call me using the nursing home's portable phone....so far it has often, (but not always) been near the time of shift change in the afternoon When she calls, she is hostile, angry, demanding that I come get her immediately. Not infrequently, she also gets angry when I am visiting because she cannot come home and does not comprehend/can't remember why she can't. I have used Feil's validation approach and/or redirection with limited success. It is getting to the point that I cringe when the phone rings and I don't want to answer it. Suggestions?
