Try braiding it wet. That might help a little, but as it dries it will
still poke out. There's really no way to get around that problem.

I've always been told that braiding your hair wet is a big no-no. It's
because as your hair dries, it expands and can cause breakage. Edit: Not
sure why I received the downvotes. Did I not contribute to the
conversation? Was I being snide? If I'm wrong, you can tell me that I
am, or better yet, why I am wrong. Downvotes don't help anybody.

I think folks just have down votes mixed up with disagreement or are
doing that instead of telling you why you're wrong. I've never heard
this, I don't think there is any science behind it either. People with
long, strong hair have been braiding it wet for many years. I think
you're safe! And you weren't being snide at all! :)

Thank you for the responding! I was waiting for someone to tell me why
my thought process was wrong. My hair is not strong, nor thick. That is
maybe why I've been told not to braid it wet, especially not wet and
tight. It may depend on your hair type I guess. So braiding wet might
not be the best advice for everyone!

The only real no-no I've ever heard of or encountered about braiding
your hair wet is to take it down in 8 or so hours if it's really thick
to keep down on musty smells. I've never heard the hair breakage thing.

I haven't either, I used to wet braid my hair all the time while I was
working crazy hours. I usually towel dried it as much as possible, ran a
leave in conditioner through it, and did a french braid. I never had any
problems with breakage or musty smells. In fact, I think it helped keep
my hair stronger, no blow drier or hot flat iron.
