The LISP-Lab consortium (http://www.lisp-lab.org) worked in the last few 
years to a novel solution for the interconnection of multiple 
independent mapping systems. We have posted a video tutorial that 
provides a description of the proposal, with motivations and technical 
demonstration of the major bricks:
