Sorry; didn't mean to imply that. I meant that I agree with your discussion
of why removing them is not an formal problem.

While I agree that we don't have to remove the syntax, removing them would
be more than a nicety: it makes the syntax checking significantly simpler,
as well as simplifying any APIs that are used with language tags.
