No question that VPNs can play the different interconnect isolation roles with different properties.
There would be a VPN technology doing TDM or DWDM or space isolation in the fronthaul. There would be VPN doing probably ultra low jitter packet isolation in the CRAN fabric and then pretty much any packet VPN technology doing isolation in the DC fabric. However there are also mechanisms to control antennas, control antenna lenses, pick/start/stop/program the digital signal processing software (Numerology) etc. So a VPN can have some of the required properties but no way does it cover everything, and that everything is what is being called a slice.

A slicing controller would really be just an orchestrator that tells the different VPN's what do for the different network segments and then programs the ends/mid points with the appropriate behavior.
