Without claiming any first-hand experience, my sense is that handing the person you met in the bar a password to access your phone number may limit your romantic prospects unless the bar happens to be next to an IETF (or RSA conference) meeting.

Access to "whois-like" information should indeed be controllable by users as that could greatly improve CNAM-style services and third-party "this is a good guy/business" validation.

Interesting comments.  Thank you Henning.  I'll check out the presentation.

Buried in my blather around how to use domain names as a starting place for single sign-on management of communications contacts using MODERN protocol tools was the comment that multiple passwords would be used to manage access to sets of private reachability addresses.  i.e., I might permit someone to find me on Tinder, but not permit them to know my telephone number.

If we plan to give individuals the ability to make reachability assignments, the protocol tools should support assignments being fully individualized.
