Converting to XML is the best approach.

Reading word is somewhat inconventient but doable since I have to move
the file to another machine that runs openoffice.  I wouldn't run an
insecure app like that (or worse yet an insecure OS with an even less
secure app) on any machine I actually cared about.  :-)

The XML is quite easy once you've done it the first time.

I'll wait for you to convert to XML and I'll deal with what you sent.

Yes, but some document formats are simply unacceptable and word is one
of them.  Not too fond of powerpoint either.
