If you are running Ghostscript 3.0 look at
       /usr/local/lib/ghostscript/pstoppm.ps
which conerts postscript to ppm. The pbmplus utilities then provide
a filter to convert ppm to g3 format.

Excuse me, but where is this 3.0 version of GhostScript available?
