IETF IN THE NEWS

Finding a Foreign Policy for the Internet

... First, policymakers must center on the fact that individuals play a vital role in the internet. This means bringing individual engineers, academic teams, and civil society organizations more tightly into the implementation of any foreign policy for the internet. This also means not conflating companies and individuals, where the private sector is not a stand-in for unaffiliated individual designers, network operators, and researchers. The internet is shaped by protocols determined by hand signals in the IETF, core technologies developed and once maintained by academics, and a community of network operators whose rough consensus and running code determine the outcome of DDoS attacks and the bandwidth available for Game of Thrones.

Keeping up with DoT, DoH and HTTP/3 changes to your network by Paul Adair, Principal Product Manager, and David Ayers, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Infoblox.

DoT and DoH have been in the news a lot over the last couple of years. The reason being is that they have the potential to change the way the Internet functions. With Apple’s recent releases of iOS 14 and macOS 11 and new protocol efforts on-going at the IETF, we can now see how much things are changing. Even the United States National Security Agency (NSA) has newly posted guidance that organizations host their own DoH resolvers and avoid sending internal DNS traffic to external third-party resolvers.

SMPTE, MESA Collaborate on Metadata Standard

... "The Language Metadata Table was started at WarnerMedia in 2017 to normalize language codes within the organization, and IETF BCP 47 was selected due to its flexibility," said Yonah Levenson, LMT chair at MESA. "As interest in LMT as the M&E industry's language code solution increased, SMPTE recognized the value of the LMT and came on board as the technical partner/advisor."

Are emails addresses case sensitive?

... Originally, email addresses could only be registered using the letters of the Latin alphabet, numbers, and a limited set of special ASCII characters. However, the IETF subsequently developed rules and standards for the inclusion of international characters.

CoAP is Cool: Building Sustainable LPWAN Solutions, Part I

... Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) or RFC 7452, as the IETF calls it, is the perfect choice for solutions needing to get data from devices to the cloud where economic or technical constraints are present. Not sure if CoAP is right for you? Ask yourself the following questions:

HTTP-Header bekommen feste Struktur [HTTP headers have a fixed structure]

Milliardendeal: Tinder kauft KI-Videochat [Billion-dollar deal: Tinder buys AI video chat]

Echtzeitkommunikation mit WebRTC [Real-time communication with WebRTC]

[Taiwan's IPv6 usage has reached 50%: NCC: laying the foundation for the Internet of Things]

Encouraging vulnerability treatment: How policy makers can help address digital security vulnerabilities

Digital security risk undermines trust in digital transformation and generates significant economic and social costs. Estimates suggest that the cost of digital security incidents ranges between USD 100 billion and USD 6 trillion per year. Digital security risk also poses an increasingly serious threat to individuals’ safety, as more consumers and businesses adopt vulnerable Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

This old security vulnerability left millions of Internet of Things devices vulnerable to attacks

'History's repeating,' warn security researchers, who find that a computer security issue that's been known about for decades could be used to manipulate IoT devices - so apply the patches now.

How Microsoft Could Redefine the Power Industry with Quantum Computing

Governments and tech companies have been investing heavily in quantum computing in the hopes that it will revolutionize cryptography, machine learning, chemistry, communication, and other fields. But it surprised me to learn that the much-talked-about technology also could have a great impact on energy, leading to cleaner fuel, lower emissions, and more efficient electrical power systems.

DNS Privacy In The Age Of Zero Trust

For the vast majority of its existence, DNS has been public by default, but renewed concerns about privacy have forced changes. Apple is now pushing DoH and DoT, which both allow devices to make DNS inquiries encrypted and to choose a trusted DNS server for most queries. Microsoft is pursuing a similar approach.

The Inventors of the Internet: An introduction to the people that invented the world we take so much for granted, and where to find out more about them.

Throughout the years I have worked with computers, I have been fascinated by the human story behind the technological breakthroughs — the people that changed the world. I have brought a few of the more prominent names together below, introducing their influence on the world we now take so much for granted.
