Tech experts predict the “new normal” by 2025: Experts predict the “new normal” by 2025 – in the wake of COVID-19 – will be far more tech-driven, presenting more big challenges

A plurality of experts predict that sweeping societal change will make life mostly worse for most people as greater inequality, rising authoritarianism and rampant misinformation take hold in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, according to a new report by Elon University’s Imagining the Internet Center and Pew Research Center. Still, a portion believe life will be better in a ‘tele-everything’ world where workplaces, health care and social activity improve.

WebRTC is now a global standard – how do users benefit today and in 5G?

Web Real-Time Communications (WebRTC) recently became an official standard. A number of companies have worked with developing this technology over the past years, and the W3C and IETF standardization bodies announced on 26 January 26, 2021, that it is now an official standard.

2020: A Record Year for MANRS

Over the past year, COVID-19 underlined the importance of a secure and resilient Internet to ensure we stay connected online. For MANRS, this meant even more incentive to work with network operators, Internet exchange points (IXPs), and content delivery network (CDN) and cloud providers to ensure data went where it was supposed to go via secure paths.

DDoS Attacks Wane in Q4 Amid Cryptomining Resurgence

Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks dropped significantly at the end of 2020, down 31 percent in the fourth quarter, according to researchers. The reason? Cybercriminals have switched their efforts (and their botnets) to cryptomining.

A matter of profit: DDoS attacks in Q4 2020 dropped by a third compared to Q3, as cryptomining is on the rise

As people began to spend more time online in 2020, it resulted in a boom of DDoS attacks. And in the fourth quarter, attacks on educational institutions continued: several schools in Massachusetts and Laurentian University in Canada experienced such incidents. Online gaming services also suffered DDoS attacks.

6G internet? Internet pioneer Vint Cerf isn’t buying the hype

Vint Cerf has seen a lot of upgrades to online access since he cowrote the internet’s core Transmission Control Protocol in 1974. So you’ll have to forgive him for a certain glibness in the recap he recently shared of the last 15 years of wireless connectivity: “2G to 3G to 4G to 5G and whatever the heck 6G is.”
