Visual Representation Of The Evolution Of The Internet Truly Leaves You Speechless

... However, a 2010 exhibit of the original Opte viewable at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and in an edition of Discover Magazine, used Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) as data points instead of traceroutes, in order to create a more accurate view of the internet. More recent maps even show BGP route leaks, which are incidents that involve “the propagation of routing announcement(s) beyond their intended scope” according to The IETF's definition, or more exactly, events where the data that was meant to go on a certain path was accidentally or maliciously redirected to other parts of the network.

Interview mit Alkira zur neuen Ära des Cloud-Networking [Interview with Alkira on the new era of cloud networking]

[What is In-Car Ethernet? What is the future of in-vehicle Ethernet?]

[Cloud Trend Weekly Issue 2: MOMO shopping network double 11 traffic hits a new high, once a big crash ]

Do data protection laws really improve cybersecurity? Highlights from my conversation with Emily Taylor

Data protection and privacy laws must strike a difficult balance between individual privacy and cybersecurity. For example, what happens when a cyberattacker’s identity is masked in the name of privacy? How would existing laws in the European Union (EU), United Kingdom, and India address this dilemma? What can proponents of federal data protection or privacy legislation in the US learn from these countries?

78% of Cybersecurity Professionals Expect an Increase in DNS Threats, Yet Have Reservations

A recent survey conducted by the Neustar International Security Council confirmed the heightened interests on domain name system (DNS) security. The survey reveals that over three-quarters of cybersecurity professionals anticipate increases in DNS attacks, especially with more people shopping online amid the pandemic. Yet, close to 30% have reservations about their ability to respond to these attacks.

Treat Smart City Tech like Sewers, or Better: Cities should value IoT deployments as the infrastructure they are

Smart cities, like many things, took a beating in 2020. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, pulled its Sidewalk Labs subsidiary out of a smart-city project in Toronto. Cisco killed its plans to sell smart-city technology. And in many places, city budgets will be affected for years to come by the pandemic’s economic shock, making it more difficult to justify smart-city expenses.

The Future of 5G—and the Risks that Come With It

5G is no longer just on the horizon—it is coming, and soon. In fact, the World Economic Forum recently found that businesses will be able to benefit from 5G technology as early as next year. Despite there being no clear standards set just yet, operators and network equipment manufacturers are racing to be first-to-market. Nearly all major telecom providers this year made announcements about their initiatives including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Telstra and Telefonica.

nl: Increasing the transparency of the IoT with the SPIN PCAP reader

The Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming bigger every day. The promises are endless: the world supposedly will become safer and more efficient, amongst other things. However, there is a downside. Many IoT devices have security and privacy issues. Furthermore, it's often not very transparent to the user what an IoT device is doing in terms of network activity. SIDN Labs' SPIN project aims to give users greater insight into what their IoT devices are doing. In addition to increasing IoT transparency, SPIN enables users to exercise more control over their IoT devices and the data they share, for example by blocking their IoT devices from connecting to certain domains.

us: Consequences of Classifying Elements of the Internet as a Common Carrier

Introduction: As the internet’s role increases in our lives, so too have debates over the laws governing it, including those related to online content moderation. Recently some scholars, including law professor Richard Epstein, have begun to argue that various elements of the internet ecosystem have become so indispensable and powerful that they are essentially utilities and should be designated as “common carriers.” They argue that such an approach is needed to address concerns about the ability of some companies to prevent access to certain websites or services.
