IAB report to the community for IETF 113

This is the IAB report for the period between IETF 112 and IETF 113. This report presents a summary of activities.

< <https://www.iab.org/2022/03/18/iab-report-to-the-community-for-ietf-113/> https://www.iab.org/2022/03/18/iab-report-to-the-community-for-ietf-113/>

IAB and IESG Search for RFC Series Working Group (RSWG) Chairs

The IAB is in the process of approving draft-iab-rfcefdp-rfced-model, which specifies version 3 of the RFC Editor Model. In this model, policy definition is the joint responsibility of the RFC Series Working Group (RSWG), which produces policy proposals, and the RFC Series Approval Board (RSAB), which approves such proposals. As described in Section 3.1.1.3 of the document:

IPv6: Release Connectivity Potential, Boost Digital Economy

... Vint Cerf, father of the Internet and Internet Hall of Fame pioneer, followed on with a video message. He recalled his tongue-in-cheek forecast of the future when he said that he used to wear a T-shirt with “IP on Everything” in 1992, causing quite a stir at an IETF conference at that time. But today, the IP protocol, which is the foundation of the TCP/IP protocol suite, has indeed become the world standard. With the advent of digital transformation, IPv6-based IP technologies are widely used.

TLS upgrade broke Azure DevOps for some users

... The aim was to comply with the IETF’s March 2021 to deprecate the obsolete TLS versions that didn’t support current cryptographic algorithms.

SEI Launches Mothra for Big-Data Network Flow Analysis

... Mothra directly processes the binary IPFIX (Internet Protocol Flow Information Export) format, a standard of the IETF. “Data is laid out in a specific way,” explained Prevost, “so you can efficiently pull out just the pieces you want,” much like the sections of a physical library of books. Analysts can then use the Spark analysis engine on the IPFIX data. “Mothra lets you just drop the data right in without having think ahead about how to transform it,” said Prevost.

Wie das Internet funktioniert: Routing, Autonome Systeme, Protokolle [How the Internet Works: Routing, Autonomous Systems, Protocols]

[Is the war in Ukraine the end of the Internet as we have known it?]

[ETRI secured 85 international standard patents and 1017 cumulative patents last year]

A Roadmap for the Next-Generation IoT in Europe

The Next-Generation Internet of Things (NGIoT) coordination and support action (CSA) has published a roadmap containing projections and priorities for research and deployment in IoT and edge computing from 2021 to 2027 across Europe and beyond.

Internet of Things is the way for technological innovation

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers. They have the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. ... Africa being a developing continent has shown great promise in the past decade that can be seen in the continent’s eagerness to transcend into the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Internet of things hiring levels in the military industry rose in February 2022

The proportion of military equipment and technologies companies hiring for internet of things related positions rose in February 2022 compared with the equivalent month last year, with 58.8% of the companies included in our analysis recruiting for at least one such position.

Latest from ICANN: Quantum Computers are "Interesting"… But Don't Lose your Head

In a recent publication, written by ICANN, distinguished technologist Paul Hoffman discussed the hot topic of Quantum Computing and the DNS. NANOG had the opportunity to talk to Hoffman to better understand the current status + future of quantum computing.

Breaking the bias: Why gender matters in standards by Anjana Susarla, Omura-Saxena Professor of Responsible AI, Michigan State University

Readers of this blog may be familiar with the term digital divide: the gap between those who can access computers and the Internet, and those who cannot. Now, with algorithms influencing almost every part of our lives, we must turn our attention to the new algorithmic divide.

The cost of side-lining women in standardization

Despite visible progress in recent years, the role of women in the global digital economy still trails that of men by a considerable margin. While fewer women are online globally, the digital gender gap remains widest in the poorest economies.

Standards are coming. Are education technology companies prepared?

In this blog, LSE Visiting Fellow Dr Velislava Hillman asserts that the newly proposed IEEE standards for an Age-Appropriate Digital Services Framework should be seen as a stepping stone towards the development of meaningful frameworks and standards for governing and regulating the edtech sector.

Russia is risking the creation of a “splinternet”—and it could be irreversible

Russia’s disconnection from the online services of the West has been as abrupt and complete as its disconnection from real-world global trade routes.
