I've just emailed the following to the new nir list. There are still
some people who haven't subscribed to it yet. I'd be grateful if you
would subscribe as soon as possible (assuming you wish to continue in
 these discussions).

 Thanks - Jill

 ********************************************************************
Time to Update the NIR Report!!
 ********************************************************************

The IETF/RARE/CNI Networked Information Retrieval (NIR) Working Group
has collected together information about networked information
retrieval tools, their developers and other interested organisations
 working in this area.

The current version (November '92) of this draft "Consumer Report" may
be retrieved by anonymous ftp from:

           mailbase.ac.uk

  file: /pub/nir/consumer.report

This report is being built up bit by bit. The next stage is to look
at doing some objective "evaluation" of the various tools. (Which
supports what etc.) Are there any volunteers to work on this?

Meanwhile it is time to update the various sections of the report to
form a current "snapshot" on the activities in the area of networked
information retrieval (NIR). I would like to have these updated ready
for circulation before the March IETF meeting (starts 29th March).

I will email the authors of the various sections of the report, to
update their sections and return them to me by Thursday 18th March if
at all possible. (I'll be emailing them their current entry).

The NIR tools and groups included in the current report are given
below. I'd welcome suggestions for others to be included. (Veronica
 and XMosaic are obvious ommissions.)

                      WAIS Support Centre

      IETF IAFA WG
                      OSI-DS WG

Thanks very much for your help with this.

 Best wishes - Jill
