Below is the official notification I received today regarding an
internet-draft that Ben Polk (bpolk@netscape.com) and I
(bhern@netscape.com) submitted to ITEF proposing a full-text searching
extension to NNTP. There is an nntp-extensions mailing list
(nntp-extensions@academ.com) available for discussion and comments on
such extensions.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.

       Title : NNTP Full-text Search
Enhancements
       Author(s) : B. Hernacki, B. Polk
       Filename : draft-hernacki-nntpsrch-00.txt
       Pages : 14
       Date : 10/07/1996

This document describes a set of enhancements to the Network News
Transport Protocol [NNTP-977] that allows full-text searching of news
articles across multiple newsgroups.

This new search mechanism also allows search criteria to be saved into
search profiles. Articles arriving on the server are checked against
the
profiles, and the articles that match are collected together for the
client.

The availability of the extensions described here will be advertised by
the
server using the extension negotiation-mechanism described in the new
NNTP
protocol specification currently being developed
[NNTP-NEW].

     o US West Coast: ftp.isi.edu

Internet-Drafts are also available by mail.

Send a message to: mailserv@ds.internic.net. In the body type:
     "FILE /internet-drafts/draft-hernacki-nntpsrch-00.txt".

NOTE: The mail server at ds.internic.net can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
      a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail
readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e., documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
      how to manipulate these messages.
