+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ OFFICIAL MINUTES OF OIW MDDI SIG +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Fri, 14 Jan 94 10:30:19 EST From: Jon Stewart <jstewart@sst.ncsl.nist.gov> Message-Id: <9401141530.AA06001@sst.ncsl.nist.gov> To: bgray@sst.ncsl.nist.gov, gfisher@sst.ncsl.nist.gov, jstewart@sst.ncsl.nist.gov, jwwing@vnet.ibm.com, landberg@sst.ncsl.nist.gov, lsr@speckle.ncsl.nist.gov, m23371@mwunix.mitre.org, miker@mml.ncsl.nist.gov, schulz@sst.ncsl.nist.gov, sies@sst.ncsl.nist.gov, spielman@nist.gov, welsch@sst.ncsl.nist.gov Subject: Minutes of MDDI/OIW Dec 7-9, 1993 Minutes of the Multimedia Data/Documents Interchange (MDDI) SIG of the Open System Environment (OSE) Implementors' Workshop (OIW) _________________________________________________________________ by: Jon A. Stewart, Acting Chair and Jim Wing, Chair of ODA Text Processing Subgroup Meeting Held: December 7-9, 1993, at NIST, Gaithersburg, MD Background/Overview of the Meeting The MDDI SIG meeting is held in conjunction with the OSE Implementors' Workshop in Gaithersburg, MD, once each quarter. The purpose of the meeting is to create stable implementors' agreements which facilitate Multimedia Data and Document Interchange based on open standards -- including use of ODA, DFR, SGML/HyTime, MHEG, MPEG, JPEG, T.4 and T.6 fax, CGM, and other relevant defacto and formal standards. The MDDI SIG develops regional (North American/US) positions for the OIW workshop, and considers contributions and proposals to that end, including taking positions on issues that affect harmonization with usage profiles and implementation support requirements developed by the other regional workshops (European Workshop for Open Systems or EWOS, Asia-Oceanic Workshop or AOW). These profile development and conformance/interoperability testing efforts typically culminate in International Standard Profiles (ISPs) and related Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS). Details This meeting involved... o Work on DFR Taxonomy and Profiles -- Conducted Jointly with EWOS and AOW Representatives o Work on ODA ISRs, DAPs and Interoperability Testing o Discussion of Techniques for Profiling Multi/Hypermedia Applications o Demonstrations by NIST Personnel (Ron Wilson, Craig Russell, Greg Thornwall, Migaly Linker) of Interoperability Testing Methods for Revisable and Final Form Document Interchange o Work on ODA Content Issues -- CGM, Raster, Character Sets DFR The OIW hosted a regional workshop DFR coordinating committee meeting to establish plans for profile work on DFR. OIW MDDI SIG accepted editorship of one part of the taxonomy (ADF13) that resulted from the meeting. Bill Howell of IBM Software Solutions was named editor of the OIW part. ODA ISPs Part 1 The final texts for all three of the current ODA ISPs were sent to ISO for publication during the first week of September 1993. Availability of the published documents is now up to ISO. FOD36 Work on an ISR for FOD36 has not begun. Jim Wing, IBM Software Solutions, agreed to assume the editorship of Part 27 of the OIW Agreements which is intended for use as a guide for development of a proposal for a severely limited ISR for FOD36. The first step will be to update Part 27 to the current text for FOD26/FOD36 which served as the basis for Part 27 (aka FOD26E). ODA Level 2 ISR The version 4 document was received in late November. Discussion resulted in the acceptance of comments provided by Jim Wing. It was agreed that Jim would complete the comments using information taken from the OIW version of the ISR which is currently a working document of the MDDI SIG (section 2 of Part 17 of the Working Agreements). ODA Level 2 ATS The ODA subgroup proposed to begin work on the ATS for level 2 ISP by pointing to a document produced by CEC which is proposed as the major input to EWOS for ATS. By pointing to this document from Part 17 of the Working Agreements, the MDDI SIG makes the document official and begins the process of achieving Stable Agreement. The documents can also be made available in softcopy for review. ISO 2022 A proposal was received from EWOS to create profiles from the technical reports for ISO 2022 Coded Character Set Environment. The MDDI SIG prepared a liaison response stating that we need more time to study the proposal. Multimedia Barry Hudson, Westinghouse, presented the state of the multimedia technologies. He demonstrated some of the functionality he has been studying. Discussion following the presentation was aimed at a workplan to establish functional standardization for multimedia. SGML/HyTime and ODA were put forward as candidates. Barry and Jon Stewart are the leaders of the effort. SGML SGML experts had conflicting meetings so did not attend. Ed Levinson, Accurate Information Systems, presented a proposal for using MIME to support interchange of SGML documents on Internet. His proposal addresses issues of functional standardization which are not being addressed in current products such as naming for system independence, protection against system commands, and awareness of processing instructions' potential for abuse. Ed is looking for potential implementors to provide the next step in creating an Internet standard from this proposal. CGM CGM experts did not attend. A liaison was prepared stating support of CGM profiling effort and questioning the lack of a CGM profile of comparable functionality to that recommended in FOD26. Tutorial The subject of the tutorial was Interoperability Testing for Revisable and Final Form Document Interchange. After short discussion, demonstrations were shown of SGML Interchange and ODA, PDF, and RTF Interchange using various products.
