         The Ideal is realised........

         The ideal would be:
to transmit documents of every kind
         ...text, facsimile and graphics
         ...complete with all their attributes
         ...from screen to screen
...from any kind of system, proprietary or open, to any other
...from anywhere in the world to anywhere else
         ...from reading and understanding
...for short or long term storage
         ...for processing and further editing
         ...for re-transmission and for printing.

         That ideal will be realised.

         The ODA Consortium
Six of the world's major computer companies have formed the Open
Document Architecture Consortium to promote the ODA standard and
to provide the means of achieving it.

The companies are: Bull SA, DEC, IBM, ICL PLC, Siemens Nixdorf
         Informationssyteme (SNI) and Unisys.

         Their purpose is first:
To sponsor the development of a Toolkit that will help in the
production of suitable ODA applications for retro-fit into
existing systems and for incorporation into new systems.

From the beginning, the Toolkit will be openly licenced to anyone
wanting to develop product which uses the ODA standard.
