Hello all: In response to Greald Winters, 7 Aug 95 .. > When reading the OpStats RFC it states that it is a > good thing to be able to share statistics across > administrative domains. I have two questions: > > 1.) Can someone give me an example of how using someone > elses statistics helps me with the administration of my > network domain? > > 2.) Are network service providers really willing to > share internal statistics with competitors? The motivation for Opstats came from meetings where providers got together to share experiences, including discussions of what statistics they kept. One of the problems was that everyone collected, stored and presented their statistics in different ways. These days there are lots more providers and - I presume - better understanding of what statistics they need to maintain. This means that the original motivation for Opstats has nearly disappeared. Furthermore, in todays competitive environment, I guess providers are much less interested in sharing stats with each other. However, the client-server work in Opstats came from a provider who is interested in making it possible for his clients to get statistics for their coonnections. This seems to be a worthwhile area for future development.
