The UK Academic Community has agreed the following code of conduct.

The UK group has asked me to present/discuss this at the RARE WG3
meeting, and dependent on that group's opinion at the OSI-DS meeting.

                           Draft Code of Conduct

for users of X.500 Directory Services

                           Rodney Tillotson, JNT.
                         second draft, January 1992

It is intended that Directory information should be readily
accessible, and the Directory itself places no restrictions
on the use of such information.

However, when using the Directory you should:

1 comply with requirements of the providers of all the
computers, networks and services which may be involved
in the operation of the Directory.

             These would typically imply

a use for academic, research and administrative
                  purposes only.

b no advertising of goods or services.

c no sale of the information obtained.

d no searches or related operations so large as to
                  consume significant resources.

2 respect the privacy of individuals whose details are
             in the Directory.

             In particular, you should

a honour an individual's expressed wishes, such as
can be conveyed by a mail preference attribute.

b acknowledge use of the Directory in any unsolicited
communication to five or more people, and state
by what categories of role or interest those people
                  were selected.

c let each individual know on any occasion when her
or his details are made known to a third party.
