Directory Services Activities
-----------------------------

This report serves as a forum to distribute information about the
various efforts working to develop directory services that are for, or
affect, the Internet. It is published as part of the FOX Project's
efforts to facilitate the coordination and cooperation of different
directory services working groups. This report is distributed
virtually unchanged as part of the Internet Monthly Report, and a
modified version is submitted to the PARADISE International Report.
We would like to encourage any organization with news about directory
service activities to use this forum for publishing brief monthly news
items. The current reporters list includes:

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY
----------------------------------------------

     Pilot Management
     ----------------
The dialup Directory User Agent (DUA) interface set up late
in July continues to receive moderate use. Fourteen
connections were made via the dialup facility during
     September.

The NIST X.500 team met with Tom Wagner, Dan Schneider and
Tom Dewitt of GSA to discuss NIST's progress on work items
associated with the X.500 pilot, among other things.
Progress was found to be satisfactory, with most commitments
     satisfied.

     NIST X.500 Implementation
     -------------------------
During September, requests for the Custos software were
received from the University of Missouri, the University of
Madrid (Spain) and the Xerox Corporation, bringing the
number of organizations that have received release 0.2 of
the software to a total of thirty. Dr. Adrian Tang of the
University of Missouri met with the NIST X.500 team during
September's OSE Implementors' Workshop, and indicated that
he and his staff had a particular interest in expanding the
range of attributes and attribute syntaxes recognized by
     Custos.

Work was commenced on reconfiguring Osiware's XDUA X.500
Directory User Agent package to support all of the Directory
attribute types and syntaxes currently supported by Custos.
There are still some occasional bugs which crop up when XDUA
is run, and we are working with Osiware in an effort to
track them down and remedy them. XDUA is our DUA package of
choice for Custos demonstrations because it provides a user
friendly, X-Windows-based interface to Custos while at the
same time demonstrating interoperability between two quite
     unrelated X.500 implementations.

     Pilot DSA Usage Statistics
