- Lightweight Protocols for Access and Synchronization
(LDAP, CLDAP, SOS, SOLO, etc.) -- Tim Howes.
Regarding SOLO vs [C]LDAP:
There are two main differences between SOLO and LDAP, and that is the service
model. LDAP tries to make directory access simpler by "skinning" the DAP;
we try to make the network more efficient by embedding the "user friendly name
resolution" in the servers.
Then, LDAP rely on the DSP (gatewaying to X.500), while SOLO requests can
either be gatewayed to X.500 or relayed to other SOLO servers. SOLO servers
can cache intermediate results, which may be very useful if he pattern we see
today continues, i.e. intensive use of the UFN algorithm.
We will soon produce a comprehensive SOLO spec.
