To all Internet and X.400 (GEMDES and PRMD) Users of the Government of
Canada's X.400/SMTP Gateway:

The X.400/SMTP gateway has been set-up as a pilot trial by the Government
Telecommunications Agency under the Government Telecommunications Architect
Program. The gateway is hosted by the X.400 PRMD, GC+GATE.PAS and by the
Internet host, gemdes.carleton.ca. The gateway is jointly administered by
GTA and Carleton University in Ottawa, and is for the exclusive use of the
Government of Canada and their correspondants.

On May 1, 1993, the X.400 PRMD, named GC+GATE.PAS, which hosts the gateway,
will be transfered over from the TELECOM.CANADA ADMD to the GOVMT.CANADA
ADMD. As a result, the ADMD name that X.400 users must enter to route
messages to the Internet will change from TELECOM.CANADA to GOVMT.CANADA.
Another less obvious impact is the requirement that originators of Internet
messages to GEMDES users must include the Organization name of the intended
GEMDES recipient. The ADMD name for GEMDES users will continue to be
TELECOM.CANADA.

The X.400/SMTP gateway is being used as a test facility for a trial period.
As a result the gateway does not have a full time administrator to monitor
its operation and may occassionally experience some unscheduled downtime.
GTA and Carleton will, however, endeavour to keep downtime to a minimum.

GTA recoginzes the requirement for an X.400/SMTP gateway for Government
users and has planned to make it one of the services available to
subscribers of the Government Message Handling Service (GMHS) and to GEMDES
users.

The remainder of this message explains how to format the addresses of
messages exchanged by X.400 and Internet users.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this message, the term PRMD (Private Management Domain) will be used to
refer to those local departmental mail systems which are capable of sending
and receiving X.400 messages. Some Government PRMDs may be registered
under an ADMD other than the GOVMT.CANADA ADMD (e.g., TELECOM.CANADA,
ATTMAIL). Be sure to use their correct ADMD name. Unless otherwise stated,
the term GEMDES also includes users under the organizations called INAC,
SEN.RICS, TRANSPORTCANADA, EIC, and RC.GST. The term Internet will be used
to refer to users of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) on the
Internet and associated TCP/IP networks (e.g., UUCP, ARPA Internet, BITNET,
NETNORTH, JANET, EAN, COSAC, ACSNET, JUNET, CSNET Phonenet, etc.).

For GEMDES users and those wishing to correspond with GEMDES users,
inqueries about Internet/X.400 address formats should go to the GEMDES
Customer Assistance Center (CAC):

          ADMD Name:                         TELECOM.CANADA
          Organization Name:                 GEMDES
          Domain Defined Attribute Type:     ID
          Domain Defined Attribute Value:    GEMDES.ADMIN

Technical questions should be directed to the contacts listed at the end of
this message.

1) SENDING MESSAGES FROM GOVERNMENT PRMDS TO THE INTERNET

When sending a message from a PRMD to an Internet user, use the following
X.400 Address values:

    Country Code:                     CA
    ADMD Name:                        GOVMT.CANADA
    PRMD Name:                        GC+GATE.PAS
    Domain Defined Attribute Type:    RFC-822
    Domain Defined Attribute Value: <Internet address with substitutions>

Examples of Internet Addresses:

Internet Address Corresponding Internet Address With Substitutions
----------------           -------------------------------------------------
john@attmail.com.ca        john(a)attmail.com.ca
john_smith@odie.gta.doc.ca john(u)smith(a)odie.gta.doc.ca

In an Internet address where the @ symbol would normally be used, the string
of characters (a) must be substituted. This is because the @ symbol is not
supported by X.400 addressing. When the message is transfered to the
Internet, the characters (a) will be converted back into the @ symbol.
There are other symbols which are used in Internet addresses that are not
supported by X.400 addressing. Here is a partial list of these symbols and
their substitutions:

     Internet address symbol Replace with the characters
     -----------------------       ---------------------------
               %                               (p)
               @                               (a)
               !                               (b)
               "                               (q)
               _ (underscore)                  (u)

X.400 addressing is limited to the characters in the PrintableString
character set, as shown in the table below:

          Character                      NameSymbol
          ---------                      ----------
          Uppercase Letters              A, B, ... Z
          Lowercase Letters              a, b, ... z
          Digits                         0, 1, ... 9
          Space
          Apostrophe                     '
          Left Parenthesis               (
          Right Parenthesis              )
          Plus Sign                      +
          Comma                          ,
          Hyphen                         -
          Full Stop                      .
          Solidus                        /
          Colon                          :
          Equal Sign                     =
          Question Mark                  ?

Note also that with this gateway, Internet users can only receive ASCII text
messages and attachments.

2) SENDING MESSAGES FROM THE INTERNET TO GOVERNMENT PRMDS

When sending messages to PRMDs from the Internet, use one of the following
Internet address formats:

    /C=<Country Code>/ADMD=<ADMD Name>/PRMD=<PRMD Name>/O=<Organization
    Name>/OU=<Organizational Unit Name>/S=<Surname>/G=<Given Name>/
    I=<Initials>/DDT=<Domain Defined Attribute Type>/DDV=<Domain Defined
    Attribute Value>/@gemdes.carleton.ca

or:

    @gemdes.carleton.ca:/C=<Country Code>/ADMD=<ADMD Name>/PRMD=<PRMD
    Name>/O=<Organization Name>/OU=<Organizational Unit Name>/
    S=<Surname>/G=<Given Name>/I=<Initials>/DDT=<Domain Defined Attribute
    Type>/DDV=<Domain Defined Attribute Value>/

One of the above alternatives should work; if one does not work, try the
other. Note that there are no spaces nor any carriage returns in either of these addresses.

Usually not all of the address values shown in the above two formats are
required. The values that you must use to reach a recipient depends on how
the target system has been structured to address its local users. To get
the X.400 address of a user on a PRMD, you must ask either the intended
recipient, the administrator of the PRMD, or the GEMDES Customer Assistance
Center (CAC).

Often, the Domain Defined Attribute Type "ID" is used to identify a
recipient's Mailbox or ID on the target system. This is usually the case
when Personal Name addressing is not supported by the target system.

Some examples of Internet addresses for users on Governmental PRMDs are as
follows:

    /C=CA/ADMD=GOVMT.CANADA/PRMD=GC+SSC.ASC/S=Smith/G=John/
    @gemdes.carleton.ca

     /C=CA/ADMD=TELECOM.CANADA/PRMD=GC+DEPT.X/O=DEPTX/DDT=ID/DDV=MBROWN/
     @gemdes.carleton.ca

     /C=CA/ADMD=GOVMT.CANADA/PRMD=GC+EMR/O=EMR/OU=ITB/S=Smith/G=John/
     @gemdes.carleton.ca

3) SENDING MESSAGES FROM GEMDES TO THE INTERNET

When sending a message from GEMDES to the Internet, enter the following in
the TO: field of the GEMDES message:

 [RFC-822="<Internet address with substitutions>"]GC+GATE.PAS/GOVMT.CANADA

Examples:

Internet Address Internet Address with substitutions
----------------           ----------------------------------------
joe@attmail.com.ca         [RFC-822="joe(a)attmail.com.ca"]GC+GATE.PAS/
                           GOVMT.CANADA

joe_smith@odie.gta.doc.ca  [RFC-822="joe(u)smith(a)odie.gta.doc.ca"]
                           GC+GATE.PAS/GOVMT.CANADA

Note that in an Internet address where the @ symbol would normally be used,
the string of characters (a) must be substituted. This is because the @
symbol is not supported by X.400 addressing. When the message is transfered
to the Internet, the characters (a) will be converted back into the @
symbol. There are other symbols which are used in Internet addresses that
are not supported by X.400 addressing. Here is a partial list of these
symbols and their substitutions:

     Internet address symbol Replace with the characters
     -----------------------       ---------------------------
               %                               (p)
               @                               (a)
               !                               (b)
               "                               (q)
               _ (underscore)                  (u)

X.400 addressing is limited to the characters in the PrintableString set.
The PrintableString character set is listed earlier in this message.

Note also that with this gateway, Internet users can only receive ASCII
text messages and attachments.

4) SENDING MESSAGES FROM THE INTERNET TO GEMDES

Use the following Internet address format to identify GEMDES recipients:

    /C=CA/ADMD=TELECOM.CANADA/DDT=ID/DDV=<GEMDES ID>/S=<Surname>/G=<Given
    Name>/I=<Initials>/O=<Organization>/@gemdes.carleton.ca

or, alternately:

    @gemdes.carleton.ca:/C=CA/ADMD=TELECOM.CANADA/DDT=ID/DDV=<GEMDES ID>/
    S=<Surname>/G=<Given Name>/I=<Initials>/O=<Organization>/

For the Organization, enter one of the following, depending on which
Organization your intended GEMDES recipient is under:

     GEMDES                   INAC           SEN.RICS
     TRANSPORTCANADA          EIC            RC.GST

The GEMDES ID, or the GEMDES user's Personal Name, or both may be used to
identify a GEMDES recipient. If Personal Name is used, the Personal Name
information must match the information stored for that user on the GEMDES
system. Some examples of Internet addresses for GEMDES users are:

    /C=CA/ADMD=TELECOM.CANADA/O=GEMDES/DDT=ID/DDV=SMITH.J/
    @gemdes.carleton.ca

    /C=CA/ADMD=TELECOM.CANADA/O=GEMDES/S=Smith/G=Joe/@gemdes.carleton.ca
