Hi Stephen, that's a very good point; apparently, I could not see the
wood for the trees!

You are right, we are talking about a symmetric cipher here, so the work
for even doubling the amount of CPU per packet will probably be dwarfed
by the energy it takes to send the frame out in the air - activate the
radio transceiver, assess the channel, actually send the data, switch
back to receive mode to read the ACK, etc.
