This keeps niggling at me. Surely if Internet connections were certain
to be completely insecure (i.e. any interested party could intercept the
plaintext of any connection) then this requirement would be satisfied?
But it seems clear to me that such a situation would not even remotely
be in the best interests of the Internet's users.

I'd say "...as well known as possible" should be replaced with "...as
good as possible" - except you probably need to rejig the whole sentence
to turn it back into English.
