There may well be a better answer than filling in all the defaults 
during prep.
But if so, it has to address proper rendering if the defaults have 
changed since the XML was produced.  In most cases, it probably doesn't 
matter.  But if there was an explicit reason to want the old default, 
then things get itneresting when the default changes.  I don't think we 
want to archvie the schema with each and every RFC.
