It helps me tracking what is in AUTH48, and what changes are being made
(and when). (*)

Of course that wouldn't be needed if these files lived in a public
source code repository.

(*) And yes, that *is* important. Sometimes there seems to be confusion
about what kind of changes are acceptable *after* the authors approved
publication.
