Interestingly enough, the latest issue of Internet World (which I found in
my mailbox when I got home last night) covers the Internet phone type products.
According to the article there, the action brought before the FCC by the
smaller long distance companies (note that AT&T, MCI, and Sprint are not a
part of this) claims that Iphone like products violate FCC regulations and
tarrifs on voice calls (the tarrifs being there so that everyone subsidises
phone service to remote parts of the country). They want the FCC to ban
Iphone like products. So they don't want a rate change, just the banning
of something they claim is bypassing the tarrifs. They claim this represents
unfair competition since the FCC makes the LD companies pay tarrifs on this
type of traffic. I haven't been following this very closely, so I wasn't up
on what was happening. The FCC is taking comments on the case until May 8.
