Doesn't paying for it sort of defeat the purpose?  ;-)

As much as these comments are somewhat in jest they get at the root of
the argument.  If hop by hop RSVP and IP provides a more cost
effective means of providing bandwidth making a direct connection will
defeat the purpose.  If direct digital connections are priced as cost
effectively, then digital handsets will exist that take advantage of
this and the IXC revenues will drop substantially so it is likely that
pricing for relatively brief low bandwidth switched connections will
stay high.
