The ATM Forum allows three forms of ATM addresses: 1. E.164 2. NSAP format 3. E.164 with an NSAP format subaddress See ATM Forum UNI 3.1 and RFC 1577 for further details. NHRP uses the "Address Family Numbers" in Assigned Numbers (currently RFC 1700) to identify the NBMA address contents in NHRP messages. As was previously pointed out on this list, RFC 1700 currently only lists E.164 and NSAP addresses; it does not have an entry for the third ATM possible address format. I am going to ask the IANA to include a new entry in the Address Family Numbers list: 15 E.164 with NSAP format subaddress (ATM) However, the format of the encoded address also needs to be specified, since it has two variable length portions. I propose a straightforward format: Length of E.164 portion (one octet) E.164 portion Length of NSAP format portion (one octet) NSAP format portion Any comments before I send the request to IANA? By the way, I've spoken to the IANA folks about the SNAP identification for NHRP. It's in the works! Andy
