let me see, if you got a box that just plugged in, and managed to connect to
the other end without you having to figure out what line protocol the other
end was running, you woudl rip it out. 

can you explain to me why this is so evil?

i mean, i understand the desire to keep things hard to use, keeps the
children from playing with them, protects our jobs, all that, but . . . . .:)
