Subject: Updated charters for the SIG and WG
One of the things we did when we met at AIW 13 was to agree on updates to our AIW and IETF charters. I've already made the updates to the AIW charter; they should be coming out in the next day or two with Ed's refresh of the AIW Web site. I've attached below my first shot at an updated IETF charter. There are three sorts of changes to be aware of: - Changes to the paragraphs at the front, which we essentially wrote at AIW 13. - Updates to past goals and milestones. I think I've got the milestones and order essentially correct, but I'm open to corrections. - New future goals and milestones. These, obviously, are the ones that we should be most concerned with now. There are several questions we need to consider as a group, before we submit this charter to our Area Director: 1. EBN MIB schedule: I show first I-D in August, and submission to the IESG in December. Katie and I are comfortable with these dates; what do other WG members think? 2. SNA NAU MIB: We've said (twice!) that there's no interest among the current WG members in finishing the re-write of the SNA NAU MIB. In addition to removing all the SNA NAU MIB milestones for the past year (which we didn't meet), I've omitted any reference to it in future milestones. Any objections? 3. APPN MIB: I've indicated a December '97 milestone for taking the APPN MIB into the "Undiscovered Country" of progression to a Draft Standard. I *know* we'll have the implementation experience (IBM and Cisco, at least) by then, but I'm still not that familiar with this part of the IETF process. What do y'all think about this as a proposed milestone? 4. APPC MIB: Right now I don't have any future milestone for this MIB, since I'm not sure what we want to do about it. We'll have implementation experience soon, but it's sort of peculiar experience: instrumentation of the APPC *control* sessions in APPN network nodes in routers. Will anybody have any experience using the APPC MIB for instrumenting *users'* APPC sessions in end systems? It seems like we'd want to have experience of this type before we progress the APPC MIB to Draft Standard. Of course the other problem with the APPC MIB is that it's from the pre-Randy review era. It would take considerable effort (mostly mine :-( ) to bring it up to par editorially with our other MIBs. What does the WG think we should do with the APPC MIB in the rest of 1997? 5. DLUR and HPR MIBs: I know we don't even have these to Proposed Standard yet, but assuming they get there fairly soon, when should we look to take them to Draft Standard? I think that we'll have implementation experience to report in a few months, but what sort of milestone(s) should we set for ourselves? At the IETF last week WG chairs were urged to get their charters updated ASAP. If we can reach closure on our charter discussions (on the mailing list) in the next couple of weeks, I'll be able to get an updated charter to Joel by the end of April. These objects will provide the ability to monitor and control those devices, providing fault, configuration, and performance management, and will be consistent with the SNMP framework and existing SNMP standards. The working group has completed MIBs for base SNA NAU functions, for LU Type 6.2 or APPC (Advanced Program-to-Program Communication), and for APPN (Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking). MIBs for Dependent LU Requester (DLUR) and for HPR (High Performance Routing) are nearing completion. The working group is currently working on a MIB for APPN Extended Border Node (EBN). The working group will make sure that its work is aligned with the SNA DLC MIB Working Group, due to the close relationship between the devices being worked on by the two groups. Goals and Milestones Done Begin discussion of proprietary MIBS and develop a single proposal. Done Post an Internet-Draft of the SNA NAU Services MIB. Done Submit the SNA NAU Services MIB to the IESG for consideration as a Proposed Standard. Done Post proprietary MIB modules. Done Develop and post a single proposal for structure of the MIB module.
