Beholder, The Next Generation (bntg) 8 january 1992 The btng package is the result of the latest work done by the DNPAP group of the Delft University of Technology. The btng package includes beholder.exe, an RMON compliant ethernet monitor for the OS/2 operating system environment. It also includes the Tricklet package for OS/2 and UNIX. Tricklet is a set of SNMP utilities, including a full featured Perl interface. The OS/2 executables and documentation of btng and Tricklet version 2 can be found in: btng2exe.zip The full source of the monitor and the Tricklet utilities are in: btng2scr.zip The sources of the Tricklet utilities to be used on UNIX platforms are in: trcklt2.tar.Z trcklt2.zip OS/2 ---- You will need the following to run the OS/2 executables: - PC with a running OS/2 1.x or 2.x - ethernet network adapter - NDIS protocol stack - optional TCP/IP 1.2 from IBM for OS/2 (only used by Tricklet) UNIX ---- On a UNIX platform you will need an ANSI C compiler and a TCP/IP stack with socket interface. OS/2 development ---------------- To compile the OS/2 software, you will need: - microsoft C compiler 6.0 (last one with OS/2 support, thanx microsoft) - IBM's OS2 toolkit for OS/2 1.3 - IBM's TCP/IP 1.2 kit MISC ---- - btng is distributed with source code - we don't ask for much, just acknowledgement of our work, bug-reports, suggestions etc. - the software can be obtained using anonymous ftp to dnpap.et.tudelft.nl. Get the following files: pub/btng/btng2exe.zip # executables pub/btng/btng2src.zip # full source pub/btng/trcklt2.zip # UNIX source of Tricklet pub/btng/trcklt2.tar.Z # utils. pub/btng/perl4019.zip # OS/2 1.3 perl pub/btng/perl4035.zip # OS/2 2.0 perl pub/btng/unz50x16.exe* # OS/2 [12].x unzip you can also mail to our mailserver mailserver@dnpap.et.tudelft.nl Now the bad news: - btng2 is the first (beta-like) version that hits the public streets. There will be problems/bugs. - it is a very advanced piece of software, and you can do a lot of things wrong. - there is documentation, but no introduction for the use of SNMP and RMON monitors. We wrote this software to experiment with network managament, SNMP, and RMON. Although the software conforms to all these standards, it is should not be confused with commercial products. We don't give support, and don't ask for money and licence fees. So use it to experiment with network management, in non-critical network environments. If you are using the btng software, you are advised to join our mailing list. btng@dnpap.et.tudelft.nl --> mailing list btng-request@dnpap.et.tudelft.nl --> subscribtions/unsubscr.
